This is the first of the video I produced on my blog…that is to say, this one is done by Peek Productions.  The TC Daily Planet is a non-profit online newspaper that relies on donations, citizen journalism, and professional editors.  They wanted an “about us” type of video to put on their website and show when they are doing talks elsewhere…and get more involvement in the community and perhaps donations.  We discussed how to best get the message out, so we decided an interview with the Executive Director and the three editors at TC Daily Planet would work well.  This is a ‘straight from the horses mouth’ kind of video.  It also gave viewers an opportunity to meet the editors.

It is a hair longer than I prefer (7 seconds beyond 4 minutes), but I didn’t see anything I wanted to cut…I think it would have diminished the story or broken the flow of the conversation.  I liked the emotion and engagement I got from most of the people I interviewed.

There are always room for improvement.  In keeping with critiques, I will not go easy on myself.  A couple cuts had the sentences end rather abruptly.  I would have preferred a smoother transition, but the speakers where talking a little quickly and without breaks in the spots I wanted to cut from.  If you are going to be in a video, speak a little slower than normal (excitement or nervousness speeds us up).  Also remember to breathe and take a pause between topics.  At least that is what I will tell my next client.

There is much to like – good framing (peope aren’t too small in the frame; you shot shoulders & up so faces are clearly visible; not too much head room between tops of heads & tops of frame), very nice choice of background, good audio. Good use of background music. And good lighting. While you may not have used auxiliary lighting, you did position subjects relative to light so that their faces were well-lit. As for content – flows very well. Interesting that you note your frustration with length beyond 4 minutes – while some 2 min videos drag, I didn’t notice the length on this one because it was interesting.

Kudos on an excellent video!
