Sony Ericsson Mechanical Engineer Recruiting Video

In: Employer Videos Critique

This 58 second recruiting video starts off strong…the position and location, but more importantly – that you will design and develop mobile phones that your friends, family, and people on the street will be using.  How cool does that sound!  Then they pointlessly go into responsibilities and qualifications.  The odds are this video will be seen near the job description where the responsibilities and qualifications will be listed.  This video could stand alone to get someone to apply…but how often will the video alone be seen?  I think rarely.

Instead, I would have continued with what makes this position great, what cutting edge or cool technologies you would be working with, and finally what makes the company a great place to work (unless there is a video for this already…and I think Sony Ericsson does have such a video, so they are off the hook).

All in all, this is not a bad video and likely increased the number of highly qualified candidates.  But the last thing that could have been spent better is the background.  Instead of the phone going through a kaleidoscope-like waltz, how about a view of the working conditions/office, a look of the CAD software at work, etc, etc.  It could have been more relevant and informational…instead of just pretty to look at.
